Been meaning to do this for ages, drum roll without further ado, a meepery on Hadir and the Colonel by Donna Barr for Aithine. On the most basic level, it's a quest story. However, an writer with a lick of sense or learning knows that the details are what raises a story beyond the most basic level. So instead of a young brave boy going out to quest for some sort of glory, the story turns around a rabbit (Hadir) trying to become a man. You see, a curious witch forced upon Hadir the hands and mind of a man. Why? Because she wanted to see what would happen. Simple curiousity drove the witch, not malice as is so often the case. After changing Hadir she turned him loose with a book to tell him what was needed to complete the spell, and a bag to store the ingredients in. This is were the Colonel comes in. He's a harpy variant Donna Barr created. They're a militaristic society. They're rough and tough. They're bloodthirsty, but they have honor. Hadir needs one of the Colonel's feathers. Impressed by the bravery of the this poor little rabbit, the Colonel gives it to him. Then, for reasons not explained for much later, the Colonel decides to go on the quest with Hadir. That's the beginning of the story. Barr visits the morals of hunting for a rather large portion of the book. She invents a beastiary for the story. She deconstructs that beastiary too. She also creates a heart-warming relationship between Hadir and the Colonel. It reads somewhere between friendship and familial to me. Hadir is an innocent, having just recently been a rabbit. The Colonel is the Colonel. He's older, and has seen the world, but the pragmatism he's developed is temper with honor. The book doesn't end on a happy, happy, joy, joy note, but it does end with hope. Which is a perfectly fulfilling ending. 3/27/2002
Well,CC the Tomoyo-chan idea might grow into something someday. But, for right now all I have for that idea is the little ficlet. I'm sure I'll play with the theme (Tomoyo loves Sakura) and the idea (No magic=no love) again. Thanks for the title, btw. I was just gonna call it "Voyeur." Your title is much better. Since I didn't buy a can of durian to open, I'll take your word on the smell. Tomato salsa salad (Ummmm, good.) 1-2 c cherry or grape tomatoes 1 small red onion (or half a large one) 3-4 TB chopped fresh cilantro 1 TB olive oil 1-2 TB lime, lemon or orange juice (I used lime, and it was tasty) 1/2 tsp sugar (More or less, it depends on what time of fruit you use.) 1/2 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp salt dash - 1 TB tabasco sauce (or whatever hot sauce you like.) Quarter the itty bitty tomatoes, and toss into your bowl. Chop the onion and dump into bowl. Using kitchen scissors, snip the cilantro into the bowl. Dump the rest of the ingredients into the bowl and stir. Ignore for a bit to let everything meld together. Then, serve. Blogger was an absloute bitch to me yesterday. Here's hoping that it'll behave better today. First up. I watch. I watch during cheerleading practices. I watch during sporting events. I watch during school plays. I watch at home. I watch at school. I just watch and record what I see. I have seen her grow out of her love of Yukito-san. I have seen her stumble into a love of Kaho-Sensei. I see grow into love with Lee-kun. Sometimes I point out what she misses. More often, I keep my silence. I know why she'll never love me like she has loved others. I'll always just be her dearest friend, and nothing more. It's not because her heart doesn't stray that way. Kaho-Sensei was a woman, and Sakura loved her. I puzzled it out years ago. Sakura's heart is drawn to magic. I have no magic. Therefore, I will never win her heart the way I want to. I've made my peace with that. I will just watch, and record. I will draw my happiness from that. It is not my heart's true desire, but it will do. CCS 3/26/2002
Um, Kathy? You've lost something. (pitiful voice) And, and, and I wanted to comment on it. (/pitiful voice) CC, I'm starting to think that they don't feed you people anything durian and shrimp. No black beans? No cornbread? No Bisquick (tm)? I am shocked! Ya'll have got Boston Market (tm). I really expected Starbucks to have reached your shores first. Random note, I have seen durian! I have seen it canned. I have seen it in jelly rolls. I have seen it in bubble tea! I haven't seen it fresh though. Does the picture of it on the canned durian count? I have recipes to share, because yet again I'm too please with the results of my cooking. However, I've Blogger has already eaten them once today. I'm not going to go for two times. 3/23/2002
HeyCC, I don't think Thamaris is a really a BNF. I think she's just a loud fan. Oh, and for the rest of your post, stop twisting yourself up over it. I have several rude comments about what happened on the first L, but I have no desire to share them at this point. BTW, I think I have actually figured out how to work the black bean salad into a story. *beams* Just one thing, do you know any pre-60s gossip about Australia? The more scandalous the better. 3/18/2002
I don't believe you. You lie. Lie. Lie. Lie. Lie. Lie. Liiiiiaaar! o-0 Don't mind me. Just a little punchy over here. Really should go to bed, but just gotta say one more thing. GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA!GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! GREAT BIG SEA! General Taylor he saved the day! 3/13/2002

Yet again, I am entirely too pleased w/my culinary efforts. Black Bean Salad Chop everything except the corn and beans. Chop stuff fine, trust me on this, it'll look better. Dump the veggies and beans into bowl. Take pair of kitchen scissors and snip cilantro into bowl. Stir. Crush some coriander seeds (spelling?) and dump into bowl. Add garlic, salt'n'pepper, vinegar and olive oil to taste. Taste the salad. If it tastes good to you, then serve. If it doesn't add more of whatever you think it needs. Keep doing that until you're happy w/it. There's several variations to this salad. There's one that's just straight corn. There's a mango and papya salad as well, but for the life of me, I can't recall all of that one's ingredients. Corn Chowder Brown bacon in soup pot until crisp. Remove bacon, but leave drippings. Add garlic, onion, and celery. Cook until tender, and slightly brown. Add milk and potatoes. Re-add bacon. Bring to a boil. Then, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender. (10-15 minutes). Stir in corn, salt and pepper. Cook until corn is tender (5 minutes). Using slotted soup remove over 1 1/2 cup of corn and potatoes. (Gaaaah, this was a pain in the ass. Cause it's hard to leave behind the onion, celery and bacon part of the soup! Eventually, I stopped worrying about it too much, and just did my best.) Put the removed veggies in a blender and puree until smooth. Toss your newmade babyfood back into soup, and stir to thicken. (At this point, you're suppose to add the butter.) Stir in parsley before serving. 3/11/2002
Actually, Pam, I think they are going to have a drummer. Not sure have I feel about that at all. Kathy, I agree with your vision of list politics. Thamiris has a slightly idealistic vision of fannish behavior. Be nice if it worked that way, sadly, it doesn't. 3/8/2002
Because I have no interest in what I'm suppose to be doing, I bring you a short list of CCS fic that I think is worthwhile. This list be for Aithine and her new borne T/Y obssession. Not that I'm going to be sharing why I think a story is worthwhile. I am a lazy creature, and that would burn to many of my brain cells today. Firstly, is a story by Raye Johnsen. It's called "Two Halves." Just follow the links and her instructions and you'll have it. It's mostly smut, but why should there be anything wrong with that? Secondly comes, Natalie Baan's "Kiss of Moonlight." Introspective and fluffy. Next up, Hth's Territory. Dreamy and a bit heavy on the "tell," but interesting. There's another Hth CCS story on ff.net, but since this list is for Aithine, and that is creepy story, I'm not going to link it. Somehow, I don't think she'd enjoy it. Boy, this is sad those 3 stories are the best CCS fics yaoi fics I can come up with. There is Leareth's unfinished Shadows of the Moon, but it's unfinished, so I refuse to rec it. I have such issues w/unfinished stories. Though, A Winter's Tale isn't bad. When all's said and done, I think Leareth has lost the spark that has her writing CCS, and has moved onto other series, so I doubt "Shadows" will ever be finished. Pity. And that is all I have to say for now.
Hey Pam, who let Great Big Sea near the drum machine? And we take it away from them? Really, if they're going to use drums, at least use real drums. Checks liner notes No wait, it looks like they did use real drums, they just sound fake. Hmph. Anyway, what worked in Little Beggar Man does not work here. You're right, this is really different from their usual sound. The trads are still good. I do believe Scolding Wife is my favorite of them. Abusive relationships at their best! "If the devil'll take her, I'll thank him for his pain. French Perfume and A Boat Like Gideon Brown have a nice notes of sadness and wistifulness throughout. Quite lovely, I do like them very much. I gotta get a cd burner. I need a new GBS mix now. Would like to add some of my Spirit of the West songs too. Someday! Someday! Really. Ya'll stop looking at me like that!

Tinkering w/my "People I talk at" list again. Hi Kathy! Here's hoping I didn't break anything. Nothing fannish to report today. Going to visit my aunt in the hospital this weekend. Her lastest bout of illness was a bleeding ulcer. 3/6/2002
And, I'm damn proud of it. Touya and Yukito are an adorable couple. Touya tries the stern and brooding seme thing, but his mask slips entirely to much for him to be sucessful. I also love the fact that Yukito can be such a ditz in so many ways, but he's together enough to stalk Touya at his various jobs. And, that he delights in taking Sakura with him on his stalking. Yukito-san is a devious eating machine! And since you thought my theory on Sakura and her love life was interesting, I think I'll share it with the rest of the world. General theory in CCS fandom is that Tomoyo doesn't have a chance with Sakura because Sakura is totally straight. She crushes on Yukito and has no clue about Tomoyo's feelings. However, after Kaho is introduced, that theory doesn't hold. Sakura does start crushing on Kaho. Not as visibly as she does with Yukito-san, but she does have a crush. So, that does mean Sakura can feel lust/desire for someone of the same sex. There goes the Sakura is totally het theory out the window. SO, what do Kaho and Yukito in common? Magic. Scads and scads of magic. Some people see a pretty dark-haired man and say "Ohhh pretty. Want! Want! Want!" Sakura sees a person with bright shiny magic and goes "Ohhh pretty. Want! Want! Want!" So, since Tomoyo doesn't have magic, Tomoyo doesn't have a chance. Sakura can she her as friend, but she can't see her as an objection of lust and desire. sniffles Poor Tomoyo. I personally think she's adorable. While I think my theory makes sense, I also think it totally blows that Tomoyo never gets to have Sakura. Of course, Tomoyo doesn't seem too upset about it, since she does her damnedest to get Lee and Sakura together... twitch twitch twitch I have had coffee. I have had a lot of strong sugary coffee. Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. Maybe drinking all that coffee wasn't the best idea. twitch twitch twitch Blargh! Blargh, I say. Neeeeed coffee. It's much too early for me to be up and functioning. Why am I doing this? Oh, right. Time and a half tonight! Money good. Kitty needs a new bag of saline! BTW, Aithine, bwwwah-ha!!!

Heh, and another falls to the lure of CLAMP. They might have issues with plotting, but they're amazing artists. Think I might have to dig out my copies of TB just to have a nice drool fest over them. Does anyone else think of nasty evil diseases whenever they use the acronym TB? Or am I alone in this particular mental quirk?
